In brief, a mud is a multi-player role-playing type game. Though there are specialized client programs for connecting the mud server, the regular telnet client program will do. Usually, the mud games reaquire that you connect to some odd port, rather than the default telnet port. Easy enough.

I used to play on some muds, but, it's been a long time since. The ones I used were loosely based on games like Dungions and Dragons. You get a basic character to play in the game. There are other player characters logged in, as well as characters, rooms, weapons, etc, created by the "dungeon masters" of the game (specially privileged users).

Hope this helps a bit,

I haven't heard of any insecurities when being a client on a mud. If you're running a mud server, you may want to protect yourself.

To get what?

The're isn't anything to get; you have to learn of a server running a mud, and telnet to the ip address and correct port. Unless you're referring to a specialized mudding telnet client. If yes, I think there's one mentioned on the jfwlite page, along with scripts for using it.

JAWS works well with muds, assuming JFW works well with the telnet client you choose. For instance, it works well with the client that comes with Win XP/ 2K.

Hi there:

As a bit of a mud connoisseur, maybe I can help shed some light on to this. First, you need to think about what type of genre you would like to play in. Cyber punk your thing? Bolkien? Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series seems to call you in to its world? www.mudconnect.com is a website with a plethra of muds, information, and clients. Depending on your style of play, a mud can be a very fun challenge. Hack and slashing your thing? Real-time roleplaying your arena? Just as there are many people in the world with varying interests, there are also many different muds that would suit them.

Some muds can be frustrating if there is not an option to turn off the prompt, or to turn off an ascii map if the mud offers that. As for clients, I have found that with a bit of tweaking, GMud and Mushclient work quite nicely with jfw.

In any case, check out the faq at www.mudconnect.com and feel free to ask all the questions you like.

Take care:

Sarila

I've gotten Monkey Term to work with JAWS by using a comm dll to actually send text from the mud to JAWS for speaking. I've also written VBScript for Monkey Term to allow for simultaneous sounds. Files, which you can feel to use at your own risk and with no guarantee of support, are here:
